Although Das Rheingold comes first in the sequence of Ring operas, it was the last to be conceived. Wagner’s plans for the cycle grew backwards from the tale of the death of the hero Siegfried, to include his youth and then the story of the events around his conception and of how the Valkyrie Brünnhilde was punished for trying to save his parents against Wotan’s instructions.

Encara que Das Rheingold és la primera de la seqüència de les òperes del Ring, va ser l’última a ser concebuda. Els plans de Wagner per al cicle era retrocedir des de la història de la mort de l’heroi Sigfrid, per incloure la seua joventut i després la història dels esdeveniments al voltant de la seua concepció i de com la valquíria Brunilda va ser castigada per intentar salvar els seus pares en contra de les instruccions de Wotan.

So in August 1851, Wagner wrote in “Eine Mittheilung an meine Freunde” (“A Communication to My Friends”), “I propose to produce my myth in three complete dramas….”. However, by October, he had decided that this trilogy required a prelude and the text of “Eine Mittheilung” was duly altered to reflect the change. To the sentence quoted above he added the words, “which will be preceded by a great prelude”.

Així, a l’agost de 1851, Wagner va escriure en “Una comunicació als meus amics“, “Em propose construir el meu mite en tres drames complets….”. No obstant això, a l’octubre, havia decidit que aquesta trilogia requeriria un preludi i el text de “Una comunicació…” va ser degudament modificat per reflectir el canvi. Per a la frase esmentada anteriorment, va afegir les paraules: “que serà precedida per un gran preludi“.

Das Rheingold premiered at the National Theatre Munich on 22 September 1869. Wagner wanted this work to premiere as part of the entire cycle, but was forced to allow the performance at the insistence of his patron King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The work was first performed as part of the complete cycle on 13 August 1876, in the Bayreuther Festspielhaus.

L’or del Rin es va estrenar al Teatre Nacional de Munic el 22 de setembre de 1869. Wagner volia que aquest treball s’estrenara com a part de tot el cicle, però es va veure obligat a permetre la representació davant la insistència del seu protector el rei Lluís II de Baviera. L’obra va ser representada per primera vegada com a part del cicle complet el 13 d’agost de 1876, en el Bayreuth Festspielhaus.

Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold) is an opera by Richard Wagner. It is the first of the four operas that together tell a story called Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).

Das Rheingold (L’Or del Rin) és una òpera de Richard Wagner. És la primera de les quatre òperes que en conjunt narren una història anomenada Der Ring des Nibelungen (L’anell dels Nibelungs).

Das Rheingold is an opera in one act, divided into four scenes. It is a very long act, lasting 2 ½ hours, but it is normally played without an interval as the music is continuous, even between the scenes.

L’or del Rin és una òpera en un acte, dividit en quatre escenes. És un acte molt llarg, amb una durada de 2 hores i mitja, però normalment es representa sense pauses ja que la música és continua  fins i tot entre les escenes.

The characters in the opera are Gods, Giants, Nibelungs and the Rhinedaughters. The Nibelungs are a race of dwarfs. They are cunning and evil and live underneath the surface of the earth.

Els personatges de l’òpera són déus, gegants, nibelungs i les filles del Rhin. Els nibelungs són una raça de nans. Són astuts i malvats i viuen sota la superfície de la terra.

Alberich, an evil Nibelung, arrives and tries to catch the Rhinemaidens.

The story of the opera

Scene 1

The first scene takes place in the river Rhine where the three Rhinemaidens: Woglinde, Wellgunde and Flosshilde, are guarding the precious Rhine gold. Alberich, an evil Nibelung, arrives and tries to catch the Rhinemaidens. From what they say Alberich learns that the gold they are guarding has magic powers. Alberich wants the gold, but the Rhinemaidens say that anyone who wants to have it has to renounce (give up) love. They think that Alberich will not do that because he is very fond of girls, but Alberich does renounce love and so he gets the gold.

La primera escena té lloc al riu Rin, on les tres filles: Woglinde, Wellgunde i Flosshilde, estan vigilant el preuat or. Alberich, un malvat Nibelung, arriba i tracta d’atrapar les Filles del Rhin. A partir del que diuen Alberich s’assabenta que l’or que estan vigilant té poders màgics. Alberich el vol, però les Filles del Rhin diuen que qualsevol que vulga tenir-lo ha de renunciar a l’amor. Elles pensen que Alberich no va a fer això perquè li agraden molt les xiques, però Alberich sí que renuncia a l’amor i per això aconsegueix l’or.

 

Alberich steals the gold.  The giants depart, taking Freia with them as hostage. Without Freia’s golden apples, the gods grow old.

Scene 2

The second scene takes place in Valhalla, which is where the gods live. Wotan, the chief god, is there with his wife Fricka. Two giants have been building an enormous castle for the gods. Wotan has promised them that he would pay them for their work by giving them Freia, the Goddess of Youth and Beauty. Fricka is worried about the promise that Wotan has made, but Wotan tells his wife that he is not going to keep his promise. He thinks he can find a way of tricking the giants. Freia enters. She is frightened because the giants are coming for her.

La segona escena té lloc en el Valhalla, que és on viuen els déus. Wotan, el déu principal, està allà amb la seua dona Fricka. Dos gegants han estat construint un castell enorme per als déus. Wotan els ha promès que els pagaria pel seu treball donant-los Freia, la deessa de la joventut i la bellesa. Fricka està preocupada per la promesa que Wotan ha fet, però Wotan li diu a la seua esposa que no complirà la promesa. Creu que pot trobar una manera d’enganyar els gegants. Freia entra. Té por perquè els gegants vénen per ella.

The giants, Fasolt and Fafner, enter. They want to have Freia in payment for having built the castle. The problem for the gods is that Freia has a garden in which she grows golden apples. If the gods no longer have these golden apples they will grow old and die. Wotan does not know what to do.

Els gegants, Fasolt i Fafner, entren. Volen tenir Freia com a pagament per haver construït el castell. El problema per als déus és que Freia té un jardí en el qual cultiva pomes d’or. Si els déus ja no tenen aquestes pomes d’or envelliriran i moriran. Wotan no sap què fer.

The Rhinemaidens tell Loge that Alberich has stolen the gold.

Loge, the god of fire, enters. Wotan is cross with Loge for not having found something else to pay the giants with. Loge says he has been all over the world looking for something. He tells everyone that the gold from the Rhine has magic power, and how Alberich renounced love so that he could steal it from the Rhinemaidens. He tells them that a ring can be made from the gold, and that whoever has the ring will have power over all the world. The giants hear what Loge is saying and decide that they want the gold instead of Freia. They take Freia as hostage, saying that they will be back later to collect the gold. If they do not get it then they will keep Freia forever.

Loge, déu del foc, entra. Wotan està enutjat amb Loge per no haver trobat alguna cosa més amb què pagar els gegants. Loge diu que ha estat en tot el món a la recerca d’alguna cosa. Ell li diu a tothom que l’or del Rin té poders màgics, i com Alberich va renunciar a l’amor per poder robar-lo a les Filles del Rhin. Els diu que un anell es pot fer de l’or, i que el que el posseesca tindrà poder sobre tot el món. Els gegants escolten el que Loge està dient i decideixen que volen l’or en lloc de Freia. Prenen Freia com a ostatge, dient que tornararan més tard per recollir l’or. Si no ho aconsegueixen, es quedaran amb Freia per  sempre.

Wotan asks Loge how they are going to get the gold. Loge tells them that they should steal it from Alberich. After all, Alberich stole it from the Rhinemaidens, so it does not belong to him. Wotan and Loge travel to Alberich’s kingdom under the earth, in pursuit of the gold.

Wotan pregunta a Loge com van a aconseguir l’or. Loge els diu que han de robar-li’l a Alberich. Després de tot, Alberich els el va robar a les Filles del Rin, per la qual cosa no li pertany. Wotan i Loge viatgen al regne d’Alberich sota la terra, en busca de l’or.

Scene 3

Underneath the earth Alberich is forcing the Nibelungs to work for him. They are hammering at the anvil. Mime, who is Alberich’s brother, has used some of the gold to make a helmet. This helmet is called the Tarn helmet. Anyone who wears it can change their shape or become invisible. Alberich treats his brother very cruelly.

Sota terra Alberich està obligant als Nibelungs a treballar per a ell. Estan colpejant amb el martell l’enclusa. Mime, que és germà d’Alberich, ha utilitzat part de l’or per fer un casc. Aquest casc es diu casc Tarn. Qualsevol persona que el porta pot canviar la seua forma o tornar-se invisible. Alberich tracta al seu germà molt cruelment.

Wotan and Loge tell Alberich that they have heard how clever he is. They ask him to show them what he can do with the Tarn helmet. Alberich puts on the helmet and changes himself into a huge snake. Wotan and Loge pretend to be impressed. They ask him whether he can change himself into something small. Alberich show off again, changing himself into a frog. Wotan immediately puts his foot on him and catches him. Wotan and Loge take all the gold and go back to Valhalla.

Wotan i Loge diuen a Alberich que han sentit l’intel·ligent que és. Li demanen que els ensenyen el que pot fer amb el casc Tarn. Alberich es posa el casc i es transforma en una enorme serp. Wotan i Loge simulen estar impressionats. Li pregunten si pot convertir-se  en una cosa petita. Alberich presumeix de nou, transformant-se a si mateix en una granota. Wotan li posa immediatament el peu sobre ell i l’atrapa. Wotan i Loge prenen tot l’or i regresan al Valhalla.

Scene 4

Wotan and Loge tease Alberich. Alberich asks them what they want so that he can be free. Wotan demands the gold. The Nibelungs pile the gold up. Alberich is not too worried, because he still has the ring which gives him magic power. He thinks he can use this power later to get the gold back. Wotan sees the ring on Alberich’s finger. He tells him to give him the ring. Alberich is terrified, but Wotan tears it from his finger. Before Alberich goes he puts a curse on the ring. Whoever has had the ring will die. This is very important to the whole story of the four operas.

Wotan i Loge es burlen d’Alberich. Alberich els pregunta què volen per alliberar-lo. Wotan exigeix l’or. Els Nibelungs l’apilen. Alberich no es preocupa massa, perquè encara té  l’anell que li dóna poder màgic. Creu que podrà usar aquest poder més tard per tal d’obtenir l’or de nou. Wotan veu l’anell en el dit d’Alberich. Li diu que li’l done. Alberich està aterrit, però Wotan li l’arranca del dit. Abans d’anar-se’n Alberich maleeix l’anell. Qui haja tingut l’anell morirà. Això és molt important per al conjunt de les quatre òperes.

The two giants appear with Freia. The gods have become very weak, but once Freia returns they start to become stronger again. Wotan tells the giants they can have their gold. The giants say that they must pile up the gold in front of Freia until they cannot see her. They do this, but the giants say there is still a tiny hole through which they can see Freia’s eye. They see the ring on Wotan’s finger and tell him to put it in the hole. Wotan says they can have anything they want but not the ring.

Els dos gegants apareixen amb Freia. Els déus s’han tornat molt febles, però un cop Freia torna comencen a fer-se més fort de nou. Wotan li diu als gegants que poden tenir el seu or. Els gegants diuen que han d’acumular l’or davant Freia fins que no puguen veure-la. Ho fan, però els gegants diuen que encara hi ha un petit forat a través del qual es pot veure l’ull de Freia. Veuen l’anell en el  dit de Wotan i li diuen que el pose en el forat. Wotan diu que poden prendre el que vulguen, però no l’anell.

Erda appears. Erda is the Earth Goddess. She is very wise. She reminds Wotan that there is a curse on the ring and that he should quickly give the ring to the giants. Wotan has no choice. He puts the ring in the hole. Now the giants are happy.

Apareix Erda. Erda és la deessa de la terra. És molt sàvia. Ella recorda a Wotan que hi ha una maledicció sobre l’anell i que hauria de donar-li’l ràpidament als gegants. Wotan no té una altra opció. Posa l’anell al forat. Ara els gegants són feliços.

Fafner kills Fasolt

Immediately, however, the giants start to argue with one another and Fafner kills Fasolt. The curse on the ring is working. Loge tells Wotan he was wise to give up the ring. However, Fricka is still worried because Wotan did have the ring.

Immediatament, però, els gegants comencen a discutir entre si i Fafner mata Fasolt. La maledicció de l’anell està actuant. Loge diu a Wotan que era prudent abandonar el anillo. No obstant això, Fricka segueix preocupada perquè Wotan va tenir l’anell.

Donner, the god of Thunder, enters and swings his hammer. There is a flash of lightning and a crash of thunder. The clouds vanish, a rainbow makes a bridge to Valhalla and the gods enter Valhalla. The Rhinemaidens are heard crying out to Wotan to give the gold back, but Wotan takes no notice. The gods are now at the height of their glory. We shall see, at the end of the fourth opera, that the curse will catch up with them and that they, too, will die.

Donner, el déu del tro, entra i sacseja el seu martell. Hi ha un llampec i un tro. Els núvols s’esvaeixen, un arc de Sant Martí fa un pont al Valhalla i els déus entren en el Valhalla. Les Rhinemaidens se senten demanant a crits a Wotan que els done l’or de nou, però Wotan no s’assabenta. Els déus estan ara en l’apogeu de la seva glòria. Veurem, al final de la quarta òpera, que la maledicció es posarà al dia amb ells i que ells, també, seran die.Donner, el déu del tro, entra i balanceja el seu martell. Hi ha un llampec i un tro. Els núvols s’esvaeixen, un arc de Sant Martí fa un pont al Valhalla i els déus entren en Valhalla. El Rhinemaidens se senten demanant a crits a Wotan per donar l’or de nou, però Wotan no fa cas.
